Myrmecs

Right: Guard/soldier caste. Note the oversized jaws, the targeting computer covering one eye and how myrmec weaponry includes sort of a long stocked assault rifle with a bayonet on one side and multiple grips/handholds to take advantage of their particular physiology.

Rear/top: The queen. Like regular ants, she too has a huge abdomen and highly developed (I guess) ovipositor. The queens are responsible for keeping colony population up and have a much stronger grasp over genetic engineering than most humans could hope to understand. Myrmecs as a whole in fact highly understand their own medical physiology and genetics to a frightening extent. They understand it to the point they can influence their own evolution on purpose to adapt new castes when dealing with new tasks becomes necessary, etc. This does not make them good xenobiological doctors though since the scope of their great genetic knowledge is greatest with their own species and the animals, plants and molds they breed for ranching and for food (e.g. things they are more likely to have to deal with).

There once were humans on their world but either through pollution or warfare the human race there wiped itself out. So because ants are builders and scavengers you have a degree of legacy former human technology incorporated into their machinery and computers + transportation.

Now since they primarily communicate to themselves with smell but recognized the trade/economic significance of being able to verbally communicate with other species that do not primarily talk through smell/chemical communication - soon after achieving space travel capability and having their first contact the Myrmecs came up with ways of talking to other alien races using a combination of vocoders and specially engineered vocal organs. They don't really have a written form of language though (not a highly sophisticated one anyway,- just sort of a rudimentary one that covers math, directions, locations, that sort of thing), most of their historical records are provided in the form of extremely pungent secreted crystals that they all pretty much can understand.

Fashion sense: Somewhat utilitarian. They can wear skintight decorative articles or bits of armor made from metal and plastic or a peculiar silk like fabric their weavers produce though and have a strange affinity for certain colors. Some individual myrmecs also like having tattoos but their color sense doesn't make much sense to us because as insectoids they see a different spectrum (think infrared, ultraviolet, etc) than mammals.

I still haven't come up with a name for my science fiction story but I've begun drawing some of the alien races now.
Also the funny thing about Myrmecs is they can tuck their middle legs in to "cross their arms", and have a choice of walking on 2 (sort of awkwardly),4 (better) or all six legs (good for when movement and precision counts) in addition to holding things between their mandibles.

They're not evil but can be intensely xenophobic towards each other if facing ancestral rivals.
